Samaná & Cayo Levantado Day Trip from Punta Cana: Whales, Waterfall and Beach

By Wally's Tours 3 min read

Whale watching (January to March), El Limón waterfall and the beaches of Cayo Levantado: what to expect on a Samaná day trip from Punta Cana.

Samaná is the green, wild side of the Dominican Republic: mountains that drop into the sea, coconut palms everywhere and a bay where humpback whales arrive every winter. If you’re staying in Punta Cana and want to see something completely different from the resort area, a day trip to Samaná and Cayo Levantado is one of the best excursions you can take.

What you’ll see on the excursion

Cayo Levantado

A small island in Samaná Bay with soft white sand, clear water and plenty of palm trees. It’s often called “Bacardi Island”. It’s the perfect spot to swim, relax and have lunch by the sea.

El Limón waterfall

Salto El Limón is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country. It’s around 40 meters (130 ft) high and surrounded by tropical forest near the community of El Limón. You can get there on horseback (optional) through the countryside, and cool off in the natural pool at the bottom.

Humpback whales (January to March)

From January to March, humpback whales come to Samaná Bay to mate and give birth. During the season, the excursion includes a whale-watching visit: seeing a whale breach a few meters away is something you won’t forget.

What’s included

  • Round-trip transportation from your hotel
  • Visit to Cayo Levantado
  • Visit to El Limón waterfall (horseback ride optional)
  • Whale watching in season (January–March)

Book the Samaná trip from Punta Cana

How long is the trip?

This is a full-day excursion (more than 7 hours). Samaná is on the northeast coast, a few hours’ drive from Punta Cana, so expect an early pickup and a return in the evening. The exact pickup time depends on your hotel and is confirmed with your booking. The good news: the drive is part of the experience, with views of the Dominican countryside you won’t see from the resort.

What to bring

  • Swimsuit, towel and a change of clothes
  • Comfortable shoes that can get wet or muddy for the waterfall trail
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • A light rain jacket, since showers are common in Samaná’s tropical forest
  • Cash in small bills for tips, drinks or souvenirs
  • Your electronic voucher on your phone
