Dry season, hurricane season, whale watching and the best months for deals: when to visit the Dominican Republic depending on the trip you want.
Good news first: the Dominican Republic is warm and sunny all year round. Daytime temperatures usually sit between 27 and 32 °C (80–90 °F), and the sea is always pleasant for swimming. So the real question isn’t “when is it warm?” but what kind of trip you want: the driest weather, the lowest prices, whale watching or local festivals. Here’s how the year looks.
The short answer
- Best weather: December to April, the dry season, with lots of sunshine and lower humidity.
- Best for whale watching: January to March in Samaná.
- Best value: May, June, and September to November, with fewer crowds and better hotel deals. Expect some rain showers.
December to April: dry season and high season
This is the most popular time to visit. Days are sunny, evenings are a little cooler and rain is less frequent. It’s ideal for beach days and boat excursions like Saona Island.
The flip side: it’s also the busiest and most expensive period, especially around Christmas, New Year and Easter (Semana Santa), when Dominicans also travel. If you’re coming in these dates, book hotels, transfers and excursions early.
Highlights:
- Humpback whales in Samaná (January–March). Thousands of humpback whales come to the warm waters of Samaná Bay to mate and give birth. It’s one of the most impressive nature experiences in the Caribbean. See our Samaná & Cayo Levantado day trip guide.
- Carnival (February). Colourful parades and costumes fill the streets of many cities every Sunday in February, ending around Independence Day on February 27.
May to November: warm, green and better value
These months are hotter and more humid, with more chance of rain. In most tourist areas, though, showers tend to be short and intense, often in the afternoon, followed by sunshine. It’s a great time to travel if you want quieter beaches and better prices.
July and August are busy again because of summer holidays, so book popular excursions ahead of time.
What about hurricane season?
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest activity usually between August and October. Most weeks in this period pass without any storm, but it’s worth being prepared:
- Consider travel insurance and flexible bookings.
- Check the weather forecast a few days before your trip.
- Choose excursions with free cancellation. Most of ours can be cancelled for free up to 24 hours before.
